The New Iraq....and Optimism

Gasim Hadad

Throughout the rule of the fascist Baath party, the Iraqi people experienced a lot of disasters. Their despair led them to accept whatever future that will come. That is why when the US troops invaded our country, the people did not resist the same way Iraq resisted the British troops in 1914. When the statue fell down, people could breathe freely and went out to streets cheering and feeling happy. The most truthful expression was when Abu Tahsin hit the tyrant's picture with shoes.

After thirty five years of injustice, oppression and tyranny, the good Iraqi people thought that the black days are gone forever. They believed that the freedom has reached, and that good days have returned. They thought the years they spent panting to provide food for their children are gone forever, supposing that ration cards will witness quantitative and qualitative improvements; work opportunities will be provided; unemployment will be eliminated; stolen rights will restored; and justice, equality and equal opportunities will be the dominating factor to get an administrative position. They believed that there will be no difference between one citizen and the other; all are equal in the new Iraq, as the current governors of the country used to adopt such slogans and were promising to strive to achieve them if they rule the country. Now, the US enabled them to rule the country. They promised that law will prevail, and that those belonging to the former regime that used to made troubles will be punished for what they did to the Iraqi people. They said the slogan "where did you get this?" will be applicable, and all exploiters and plunderers who stole the properties of this country will be held accountable.

Two years and a half after the collapse of the buried regime, "I mean, the former regime", because the fascist Baath regime was not buried; rather it is returning again, but this time, without Saddam. And that is what the Americans want. People started to lose the feeling of happiness; they began to suffer sadness and moaning. Cheers were replaced with wailing and lamentation. Condolence tents prevailed streets.

Differences between the new Iraqi regime and the fascist Baath regime disappeared. As Mr. Methal Al-Alusy said in an interview with Al-Sabah newspaper, "There is a kind of similarity between mechanism and behavior." Currently, the ruling parties have militias that they use to terrify citizens. If a specific minister belongs to a specific party, then his ministry goes with the party to which he belongs, and, as Sheikh Iyad Jamal El-Din said, "he behaves as if it is a province under his rule that has no relation to the state." Just like the former regime which entrusted the critical positions of the state with illiterate relatives, current ruling parties are doing the same.

As for plunder to which the properties of the country are exposed, they have doubled and increased significantly. Head of the Commission on Public Integrity announced that there are 1500 cases of plunder of public property, and that the plunderers hold high positions in the state. None of these cases has been heard by any court, while plunder continues to increase. Statistics indicate that this pillage exceeds 70%. The main preoccupation of some ministers and managers is how and how much they can steal while they are in office. What the head of the Integrity Committee in the National Assembly presented in the session held on 09/18/2005 of the National Assembly confirms what the head of the Commission on Public Integrity declared. As for delegations, they extended to include relatives of those included in the delegations.

The main concern of the Iraqis is how to protect their lives. They are expecting death at any moment. The Secretary-General of the United Nations referred to that saying, "The absence of protection to right of life that is currently dominating in Iraq…"

Unfortunately, we notice that what Iraq has been witnessing since the fall of the statue up to the moment confirms what the writer Dr. Aziz Al-Hajj wrote in his essay titled "The first is lost and the second is on the way" that was published in electronic press on 09/16/2005. He said, "Unfortunately, I do not see a glimpse of hope on the short term or on the medium term."
